Before the Upheaval

Josha is a young researcher associated with the Sheikah-led investigations into Hyrule’s ancient history and technology. She is the granddaughter of Robbie, an experienced researcher whose work on ancient machinery shaped the family’s connection to Hyrule’s research efforts. Josha also works as Purah’s assistant, giving her a place within the scholarly group that studies the remnants of the ancient world.

Josha’s particular interest is the Depths and the mysterious civilization connected to them. Her research reflects a strong curiosity about the Zonai and the traces they left beneath Hyrule, although the game provides little detail about her childhood or education before the main narrative. Her background is therefore defined less by a documented personal history than by her position among Hyrule’s researchers and by the specialized questions she was already pursuing before Link’s return to the story.

Curiosity as a Working Principle

Josha approaches the Upheaval as a researcher before she approaches it as a source of danger. Her attention is drawn to the Depths, the Lightroots, and the remnants of Zonai technology because they offer evidence about Hyrule’s distant past. Rather than treating these discoveries as isolated mysteries, she tries to organize them into a larger explanation. Lookout Landing

Lookout Landing is Josha’s primary recurring location and workplace in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. She works there as part of Purah’s research team, helping investigate the Depths and the Zonai-related discoveries emerging after the Upheaval. Josha is associated with Lookout Landing’s research operations rather than with a separate personal home, shop, or property. Her connection to the Depths is primarily professional: the underground region is the focus of her research and quest-related investigations, while Lookout Landing remains her main base on the Surface.

From Eager Assistant to Independent Researcher

Josha’s development is defined less by a dramatic change in personality than by a gradual expansion of confidence and responsibility. She begins as an enthusiastic researcher working under Purah at Lookout Landing, with a strong interest in the Depths but limited practical experience of their dangers. Her curiosity can make her impatient: she wants answers quickly and is willing to pursue uncertain leads rather than remain safely at the research station.
